Avalanche Canada is warning backcountry enthusiasts in Alberta and B.C. about the heightened risk of deadly avalanches. A stretch of cold and dry weather has resulted in an unstable snowpack and that has pushed the risk of a fatal snowslide in the Canadian Rockies to a 20-year high.

Five people died in B.C. avalanches in January, including two on Monday near Revelstoke.

This year’s snowpack in B.C. is being compared with 2003, which was one of the worst years for avalanche fatalities, according to the province’s minister of emergency management and climate readiness. Twenty-nine people died as a result of avalanches during the winter of 2002-03.

Heather Yourex-West reports on the dangerous conditions and whether or not the risk will remain throughout the winter.
