Australian leaders are holding an emergency meeting - as new coronavirus cases emerge across the country. Several cities have imposed lockdowns - and made mask wearing compulsory. Experts say the current outbreak is the most serious since the beginning of the pandemic.
Sydney's iconic opera house is shrouded in silence. Its bustling streets are deserted. The city has responded to an outbreak of the highly contagious coronavirus Delta variant with a two-week lockdown.
Meanwhile a lockdown in Darwin was extended on Monday. Other cities have made mask wearing compulsory and limited social gatherings.
Australia has only recorded 30,000 cases since the pandemic began - a low number compared to many other countries. But its success in keeping the virus at bay is being threatened by a stuttering vaccination campaign. Only around five percent of the population is fully vaccinated.
As the virus forces life to a standstill, Australians can only hope that the vaccination rollout picks up speed soon.
