Khader Adnan, an activist affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group, died in an Israeli prison on Tuesday after nearly three months on hunger strike.
Adnan, who was being held pending trial, according to Israeli authorities, had been in and out of prison for more than two decades and had used hunger strikes to protest against his arrests.
Disputing the Israel Prisons Service account, Khader Adnan’s lawyer Jamil al-Khatib and a doctor with a human rights group who recently met him accused Israeli authorities of withholding medical care.
Since 2011, Adnan had conducted at least five hunger strikes in protest at detentions without charges by Israel, according to the Palestinian Prisoners Club.
The “Joint Command of Resistance Groups” (an umbrella group comprising Palestinian armed factions in Gaza) has in a statement claimed responsibility for launching 22 rockets on Israel on Tuesday as “a first response” to the death of Sheikh Khader Adnan.
A general strike closes shops, and hundreds of people demonstrate in honour of Adnan.
There are reports of Israeli artillery hitting the eastern Gaza strip, which was followed by around 10 Palestinian missiles fired from Gaza towards Israel.

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from Arrabeh in the occupied West Bank, described an atmosphere of sadness as Palestinians mourn the death of Khader Adnan.
