Social Democrat Olaf Scholz became Germany's chancellor on Wednesday, ending 16 years of conservative rule under Angela Merkel and launching his three-way coalition that has pledged to boost green investment and strengthen European integration.

Merkel handed him over "one of the most beautiful jobs that exist," she said during a half-hour ceremony. "I know from personal experience that it's a moving moment to be elected to this post," she added.

Scholz thanked Merkel for her work during the past sixteen years and told her their collective experience "for so long will help me" in the new position.
