North Carolina District Attorney Andrew Womble on Tuesday declined to charge the officers involved in the shooting of Andrew Brown, a Black man who was shot and killed in Elizabeth City, North Carolina in April of 2021 as police were attempting to execute a search warrant.

Womble said he would not bring criminal charges against the officers, stating that the shooting was “justified to protect the safety and lives of the deputies on the scene.”

Womble said that Brown had “maneuvered his vehicle directly at the officers” and that he had “used his vehicle as a deadly weapon.” Additionally, he said that Brown had hit one of the officers with his car before they opened fire.
