Human remains belonging to pre-Hispanic peoples were found on Tuesday in Peru's capital as workers installed gas pipes in a neighbourhood north of Lima.

According to archaeologists, the remains belong to adults and children related to the Chancay and Huaura cultures and are about 600 and 800 years old.

"These people were buried with very interesting offerings, some with clay and ceramic figurines, possibly representing a female deity that accompanied them in their death trance," Calidda gas company's cultural heritage coordinator Cecilia Camargo told Reuters.

Peru is a country rich in archaeological treasures with hundreds of sites that date back thousands of years and span dozens of cultures, including the Incan empire that was in power when Spanish explorers arrived in the early 1500s.
