Auckland households regularly putting rubbish into their recycling bin could have them confiscated. This is a new initiative that Auckland Council is trialling after recycling rules were changed in February. There are currently just over 1500 households under trial, 65% of these properties were found with contaminated recycling bins, resulting in 87 having their bins removed.

Parul Sood, the council's waste solutions general manager, told Breakfast they see "gross contamination" in Auckland's recycling bins and explained the warning tag system that hopes to educate Aucklanders and minimise contamination.
