Britain's opposition leaders criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday for his handling of the evacuation from Afghanistan, the failure to predict the swift takeover by Taliban and called for the firing of his foreign minister, Dominic Raab.
Speaking after Johnson gave a statement to lawmakers on Afghanistan, opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said the prime minister was "incapable of international leadership."
The Scottish National Party’s leader in the House of Commons, Ian Blackford, renewed his call for Johnson to fire Raab for leaving unanswered correspondence forwarded by lawmakers from people in Afghanistan who were seeking evacuation.
Johnson largely ignored both reproaches, but said every lawmakers who had emailed the Foreign Office about Afghans wanting to leave for Britain would receive a reply by "close of play today."
The Prime Minister also said 311 people who are eligible for relocation to Britain under a government scheme still remained in Afghanistan.
The United States and Britain withdrew from Afghanistan last month, and Raab has admitted that both countries misjudged the Taliban's capacity to seize control. The Taliban took Kabul on Aug. 15. Johnson has faced stinging criticism from lawmakers for intelligence and leadership failures over the fall of Kabul, and he has admitted that the decision by the United States to withdraw left Britain with little choice but to pull its own forces.
