A Taliban spokesperson said on Tuesday the group would not agree to an extension of the Aug. 31 deadline set by Washington, D.C., for the withdrawal of its troops and evacuation of people, saying it would “take a serious position” if Americans were to stay in Afghanistan.

The comments come as John Kirby, the U.S. Department of Defense press secretary reiterated the U.S. government’s position that it would complete its withdrawal from Afghanistan by the end of the month.

The Taliban has also said it is “not in favour” of letting Afghan nationals leave the country, and added that after Aug. 31 it would not allow Americans to remain in Afghanistan.
