Two members of ISIS-K believed to be behind the deadly suicide bombing at Kabul airport this past Thursday were killed during a drone strike Saturday local time, U.S. military officials confirmed. Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby described the two people killed as "planners" or "one planner, one facilitator" and said they were no longer "on their muster roll," which means the group has lost some capability to plan and to conduct missions.

"Make no mistake, nobody's writing this off and saying, well, we got them so we don't have to worry about ISIS-K anymore, not the case," Kirby said in a briefing Saturday.

Maj. Gen. William Taylor also spoke about the operation, saying it occurred in the Nangarhar province and in addition to the two high-profile targets, one other was also wounded. There were no known civilian casualties. The move came barely a day after President Joe Biden promised swift retaliation for the deadly bombing.

Kirby also confirmed that U.S. troops had begun their withdrawal from Kabul airport, but they were not shutting down evacuation operations and would "continue going to the end."
