Political leaders in the U.S., Canada and Britain paid tribute to the victims of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, as the U.S. marked the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

Speaking at a memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, Former U.S. President George W. Bush said the terror attacks “revealed the spirit of a people,” referring to Americans, while President Joe Biden said the biggest question facing Americans now, 20 years after the attacks, was to show “whether democracy can work.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recalled the fellow Canadians who stepped up to help those impacted by the tragedy, and on how life changed for Muslim Canadians in the wake of the attacks.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in what was the deadliest terrorist assault on United States soil.
