U.S. attorney Markenzy Lapointe announced on Tuesday that four people, including two U.S. citizens and two permanent residents, had been arrested earlier that day for their alleged participation in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

He said the number of defendants charged with roles in the assassination in the U.S. to 11.

Moise also said that while the assassination of former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse occurred in Port-au-Prince, "much of" the planning, funding and direction of the plot to overthrow him was conducted in the United States, in the southern district of Florida beginning in early 2021.

He went on to outline the events and the charges connecting the defendants to the murder.

The arrests come after four other suspects were transferred to the U.S. last month, adding to the other three already in custody and have been charged in connection to the assassination.

Moise was assassinated on July 7, 2021 in his home in Port-au-Prince.
