Live shot from the sidelines of New York City's historic St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The parade was held up Fifth Avenue beginning at East 44th Street and ending at East 79th Street.

St. Patrick’s Day started as a small, religious holiday in Ireland. In stark contrast to the event that is celebrated today, for the first nearly six decades, bars had to stay closed because the holiday falls during Lent. The law was lifted in 1961; and now, 13 million pints of Guinness are sold around the world on March 17th.

St. Patrick’s Day traditions evolved across the pond when Irish immigrants came to Canada and the United States following the potato famine of the 1840s.

Today the event is marked with green apparel, steeped in Irish folklore and iconography, and of course, enjoyed with a pint (or more) of green beer.
