More than 1,000 people are still missing after record rainfall caused devastating floods in Germany and neighbouring Belgium. Helicopter rescue teams have been sent in to assist residents stuck in cities and villages inundated by floodwaters.

Rivers and reservoirs burst their banks across the region, triggering flash floods when the saturated soil couldn’t absorb any more moisture.

In parts of western Germany, more than 150 litres of rainwater per square metre fell over 24 hours. More than 100 people are known to have died in that country. Ross Hull takes a closer look on the damage, and reports on what’s ahead in the forecast.
