Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe both offered their condolences to the family of Emily Viegas, a 13-year-old Brampton girl who died after testing positive for coronavirus.

“This is what we feared,” Williams said, adding that the coronavirus variants pose an increased risk to younger people.

“The third wave is not to be taken lightly at all,” he said.

Yaffe added Monday that Ontario is “actively monitoring” the B.1.617 variant first discovered in India. She said Canada should look at non-essential travel “and really cutting down on that.”

As of Monday, Ontario has identified 36 cases of the B.1.617 variant.

Ontario reported 3,510 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the provincial total to 448,861. Monday’s case count is lower than Sunday’s 3,947 new infections and is the second day in a row cases have been lower than 4,000.
