Salman Rushdie, the Indian-born novelist whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked and reportedly stabbed in the neck on Friday by a man who rushed the stage as the author was about to give a lecture on artistic freedom in Chautauqua, N.Y.

A State Trooper present at the event took the attacker into custody, according to police and New York Governor Kathy Hochu. A bloodied Rushdie, 75, was airlifted to a hospital but his condition was not immediately known.

An eyewitness to the attack described the incident as “terrifying” and said the audience that was waiting for Rushdie to speak was left “stunned.”

“People were screaming and crying out and gasping... I didn't believe what I was seeing,” Bradley Fisher said. “My first reaction was ‘this has to be some kind of demonstration or stunt or something’. And then, no. It got so real, so fast.”

New York State Police later identified the suspect as 24-year-old Hadi Matar, who remained in police custody.

Police also gave an update of Rushdie's condition, saying he had been stabbed at least once in the neck and the abdomen. He was taken to hospital and as of 5 p.m. was still undergoing surgery.
