The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the final installment of its sixth synthesis report (AR6) on Monday, a key scientific assessment and summary for policymakers that governments will use to set climate targets and policies in the next decade.

“Humanity is on thin ice, and that ice is melting fast. As today’s report of the IPCC details, humans are responsible for virtually all global heating over the last 200 years. The rate of temperature rise in the last half-century is the highest in 2,000 years. Concentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least 2 million years. The climate time bomb is ticking,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a recorded address.

“The 1.5-degree (Celsius) limit is achievable. But it will take a quantum leap in climate action. This report is a clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts by every country and every sector and on every timeframe. In short, our world needs climate action on all fronts — everything, everywhere, all at once.”

The report recaps global scientists' findings from previous publications, including the impacts of global warming, and assesses nations' progress on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The report focused on drastic actions governments should take to stave off the disastrous consequences of climate change and warned of nearing “irreversible” levels of global heating as the catastrophic impacts of the changing climate become clearer.
