Members of the LGBTQ+ community in Vancouver, B.C. are celebrating Pride this weekend, a celebration that holds extra special meaning for one resident in particular.

As a transgender Iranian woman participating in such a celebration was once unthinkable for Shaya Goldoust.

She says she faced daily persecution in Iran after undergoing gender reassignment surgery in 2012 and feared for her life there. She fled the country in 2016.

“Iran is unsafe, was unsafe for me and people like me,” she says.

As Negar Mojtahedi explains, now that she’s in Canada Goldoust is determined to show her pride.
