Marking Toronto’s annual mayoral ice-skating party on Sunday, Mayor Olivia Chow attempted to deliver opening remarks at Nathan Philips Square — before opening the rink to the public — however, was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters.

“Ceasefire now!” protesters yelled throughout the event as the newly-elected mayor struggled to get her words out about the importance ice skating held to her as a Canadian immigrant in the 1960s.

Throughout the event, Chow stopped several interviews and cut her speeches short to remind demonstrators that she had “already” issued a statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

As of Saturday, more than 22,720 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since the conflict began on Oct. 7 — following Hamas’s unprecedented attack in southern Israel that resulted in the death of over 1,200 people and the capture of 240 hostages.
